Newbery Film Festival 2026

March 15 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Details

The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival is an annual video contest in which young readers create short movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery award-winning books. Creative takes are encouraged: think Charlotte’s Web as a horror movie, or The Tale of Desperaux as a musical!

For 15 years we’ve screened the best kid-made movies annually in New York, Chicago, San Antonio, Boston, and many other cities . . . including right here in Minneapolis!

Make your FREE reservation for the MINNEAPOLIS screening of this year’s 90-Second Newbery. The screening is hosted by film festival founder James Kennedy (author of The Order of Odd-Fish) and Jacqueline West (author of Long Lost, The Books of Elsewhere, The Collectors, and more).

We’ll be showing movies made by kids from Minnesota and some of the best from around the country.

This year, the Minneapolis 90-Second Newbery will screen on March 15, 2026 from 2-3:30 pm at the Minneapolis Central Library (in the Pohlad Hall).

Tickets are free! However, we recommend reserving your seat in advance to ensure admittance. Although a reservation is recommended, you don’t have to bring a printed ticket. And if you want to make a donation to keep the film festival going, we’d certainly appreciate it!
