About the North American Bear Center with Kids

If your kids have ever asked, “What do bears really do all day?” then the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota, is the perfect place to find out—up close and in person!

This one-of-a-kind, nonprofit educational center is dedicated to dispelling myths about black bears and replacing them with facts. And, it’s the only facility of its kind in the world. Founded by renowned bear researcher Lynn Rogers, it’s a place where families can learn directly from the bears themselves while having an unforgettable experience.

The Bear Center is fully accessible and air-conditioned. It’s located just one mile west of Ely (on Highway 169). Before you leave, browse the large gift shop. Your purchases help support the care of the resident bears and the center’s educational mission.

How to Spend the Day at the North American Bear Center with Kids

Plan to spend at least two hours—there’s so much to see and do! Watch the bears through large indoor windows or from the outdoor balcony. You might even catch them snacking on grapes, carrots, or peanut butter (yum!). Friendly staff and daily programs make learning about bear behavior and ecology both engaging and fun for all ages.

The Bear Center’s three resident “ambassador” bears—Lucky, Holly, and Tasha—live in a beautiful 2.5-acre natural habitat complete with forest, dens, a pond, and a waterfall. These bears can’t be released into the wild, but here, they live much like they would in nature.

Visitors often spot them swimming, climbing trees, foraging for berries and nuts, or lounging on the “cub tree.” Along the way, you’ll also see wild visitors—chipmunks, snowshoe hares, and ducks—that peacefully share the habitat.

Inside, families can explore over 50 video exhibits showcasing decades of fascinating bear research. Kids will love the brand-new Cub Room, a hands-on play and learning area designed just for them. Then, you can’t miss the theater. It features award-winning bear documentaries. Outside, there are also interpretive nature trails. If you’re passing through, this is a great spot to stretch your legs (and enjoy bird and wildlife viewing!).

Whether you’re an animal enthusiast or have a budding scientist in the family, the North American Bear Center offers a world-class wildlife experience for all ages. It’s not just about seeing bears. It’s about understanding them and learning more about these magnificent creatures. And that’s something worth the trip!
