Do a Dahl Day

Sweets and Frobscottle turn any party into a whizzpopping galliabash this September!

September 13 marks the 1916 birth date of English author Roald Dahl, the genius behind such great works as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the second movie version hit theaters in July), James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, The Witches, among other classics.

Draw on some Dahl-like inspiration to celebrate the great author and create an enchanted galliabash this month.

Let the games begin

"Adults should get down on their knees for a week, in order to remember what it's like to live in a world in which the people with all the power literally loom over you," Dahl said. Take Dahl's words to heart in a fun way by holding "knee-legged" races. Adults and kids can team up for giggle-filled relays.

Dizzy peaches

"Roll down a hill like James in the Giant Peach. Turn it into a race, and walk or run-in a straight line!-to the finish.

Crunchy fun

Dahl kept a ball made of chocolate-bar wrappers on his writing desk. He started the ball as a young man and scrunched a new wrapper into the ball each day.

On Dahl day teams of kids can see who can scrunch up an equal number of sheets of newspaper fastest one-handed with their left hands (or right if they're left-handed) and tightly enough to lob into a trash can several feet away.

Whimsical wind-down

Take a break from the squab-nabbering to watch your kids' favorite Dahl film-try the 1971 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Matilda," or the animated "James and the Giant Peach" and "The BFG." Popcorn balls are a must!

Refreshing Frobscottle

Mix green food coloring with cream soda in a three-liter bottle to make your own B.F.G. Frobscottle. Create a soda label with a "Made in Giant Country" trademark and be sure to mention that side effects may include whizzpopping after consumption.
