DVD Review: Global Wonders Series

If I could sum up my opinion of the Global Wonders videos in one word it would be “mediocre.” I had high expectations for the series when I saw the cover artwork — it is light, lively, and colorful — but the content did not live up to the cover. The videos are a mixture of cartoon and live action, which my 5-year-old liked, but I found it made the storyline hard to follow. However I thought the characters were cute and appreciated the cultural relevant topics. In one scene in the Mexico video, a Latino family was preparing for their teenage daughters quinceañera (her 15th birthday party) and the characters tell you why the party is important in Latino culture, how they prepare for it, and what they do at the party. I never knew that the girl was given a “quinceañera doll,” sometimes called her “last doll” to symbolize her change from childhood to a young lady. Besides the Mexico video, I reviewed three of the other videos: India, African-American, and Around the World. Although I wasn’t thrilled with any of them, I think the country- (or culture-) specific videos are better than the broad Around the World video. On the other hand, my daughter liked all of them and said, “I like the kids and the music.” She has been true to her word and watched them several times over since we got them. So if parents are sick of watching Dora, I’d say give these videos a try. Even though I wasn’t thrilled with them, my 5-year-old critic said “I LOVE them!”
