Instant gratification dress-up play

For Halloween or everyday play, every kid can have fun with a mask. The whole family can be superheroes or mysterious guests at a masked ball. This project is easy, inexpensive, and you probably have everything you need right in your junk drawer.

You will need
Duct tape, about five feet total
Scissors
Yarn, ribbon, or string

For decorations
Markers
Glue
Feathers, pompom, sequins, and other decorations

To make your mask
Cut six strips of duct tape, 9 ½ inches long.
Overlap three strips across your work surface, sticky side up.
Cover the sticky sides with the remaining three strips, sticky side down.
Cut out the stencil on this page.
Trace the stencil on your duct tape.
Cut along the outline.
Punch holes in the points at either end and tie strings long enough to fit around your child’s head.
Have fun decorating!

This craft was adapted from the book Ductigami: The Art of the Tape, by Joe Wilson (Boston Mills Press & Firefly Books, 2006), and is reprinted with permission from the publisher. The book, featuring crafts using duct tape, is great for older kids and adults.
