Discover the Pioneer Life at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum

Step Inside Laura Ingalls Wilder’s World—An Interactive Journey Through History!

About Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum

Address: 330 8th St, Walnut Grove, MN 56180

Step into the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. This immersive museum brings the “Little House on the Prairie” stories to life through historic buildings, hands-on exhibits, and cherished memorabilia from both the books and the beloved television series. The museum and surrounding area make for an excellent Minnesota summer road trip with kids!

A Journey Through Time

The museum is spread across eight historic buildings. Each building offers a glimpse into early pioneer life. Visit an 1898 train depot, a dugout display, a little red schoolhouse, and an early settler’s home. Walk through Masters Store & Hall, where settlers once gathered, and check out the covered wagon display. It remains as a reminder of the challenges faced by pioneers. The onion-domed house adds a unique architectural touch to the museum’s collection.

One of the highlights is the life-sized dugout exhibit, offering a hands-on experience of how the Ingalls family lived when they settled along Plum Creek in the 1870s. While Pa’s original structures no longer remain, visitors can explore the plum thickets, spring, and big rock described in On the Banks of Plum Creek.

The original dugout site remains preserved thanks to the local Gordon family, providing an authentic connection to Laura’s childhood. You can also visit the dugout site.
