Legacy Family Center Seeking Readers & Listeners

The Legacy Family Center is working together to build a stronger community. This non-profit, located in Brooklyn Park is seeking young readers (ages 13-17) to join them to read books to younger listeners in their home to their siblings and through their online community. The group currently has 11 readers and is looking to grow! They are adding new youth readers and listeners will start in mid-February 2022.

The process is simple:

-Sign-up to become a reader or a listener.
-Readers go through orientation with a family member or guardian. The training takes place on Thursdays at 8p or Saturdays at 10a and lasts roughly 45 minutes.
-Sign release for public media use.
-Receive books to read.

The group is also seeking listeners. They currently have 25 listeners and are looking for more! The age group for listeners ranges from newborns through 12 years old.

Why is this important? The value of reading aloud to children and being read to gives them a better chance of success in the future because it activates parts of a child’s brain that help strengthens their imagery and literacy development. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). A consistent reading time with children daily changes the trajectory of their lives.

They are currently recruiting only in the Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center communities. They hope to expand in the near future! The Literacy Family Center is also seeking donations to improve and expand its programs. You can donate on their website.
