When it comes to potty training, a little imagination can go a long way.
So says Lino Lakes author Mary Pap, a longtime Minnesota educator and mother of four, whose book — The Potty Fairy — relies on the powers of magical fairies to help make the toileting process exciting and fun for boys and girls.
In addition to the book (also available in Spanish and French), there are Potty Fairy companion products, including training pants; underwear with a special stamp on the rear, available in flower or lightning bolt patterns; adorable handmade dolls, male and female, available in various skin tones; and wooden horse potty riders for stability and imaginative play (and to dispel fears about The Big Potty).
Pap wrote the story of The Potty Fairy in 1989.
“I had a friend who was frustrated training her daughter, who was resistant,” she said. “I had a dream about the potty fairies and wrote the story for her and sewed her underwear.”
It worked.
“For years, I did individual books and sewed underwear for friends,” Pap said.
At that time, Pap, a single mom, didn’t have time to bring her idea to the masses. Now retired and a grandmother to seven, she’s going for it.
