Here’s How to Spend the Day at Oliver Kelley Farm with Kids
Start at the Visitor Center. Here, an engaging film introduces the story of Oliver Kelley, a farmer who revolutionized American agriculture.
Then head outside to the 1860s Farmstead, where costumed interpreters invite your family to join in daily farm chores. Think: feeding chickens, gathering eggs, pumping water, and exploring the barn. Kids will love meeting the animals, from fluffy sheep to crowing roosters! Meanwhile, older kids can also get hands-on help in the house kitchen or with garden tasks. Of course, the root cellar, chicken house, and machine shed all offer little surprises that will spark curiosity in little visitors.
Next, explore the Farm Lab. This modern addition to the property is where families can learn more about how today’s farmers grow food and care for animals. It’s a great way to connect the dots from the 1860s to today, especially for young kids beginning to understand where their food comes from.
Finally, don’t miss the nature trails! Bring a stroller or baby carrier and follow gentle, well-marked paths along the Mississippi River and through restored prairie and woodland. You might spot deer, eagles, or even wild turkeys. These trails are perfect for a little nature break between farmyard fun.
Facilities are clean and family-friendly, with accessible trails, changing tables, and plenty of space for snacks or a picnic lunch. The gift shop is a hit with kids, offering farm-themed toys, books, and treats.
