Now that the school year is half over, you're probably facing stacks of art projects your children have brought home. They're beaming with pride, but you're scratching your head: What will you do with them all?
Sure, it would be great to be able to keep every masterpiece, but most of us don't have room. So how do you display the best works of art without turning your home into Romper Room?
First, create a display area your kids can call their own. Instead of the fridge, try an oversized corkboard or a series of inexpensive ornate frames from a thrift store. You can also install magnetic strips along the length of a wall to create a “gallery” feel. Special, thoughtful displays will help make your children feel like they've created one-of-a-kind masterpieces.
While every project seems like a keeper when it comes in the door, most people simply don't have room for everything. Purge periodically, keeping only the best or most meaningful items. When your kids bring something home they want to keep, ask them to file it in their very own keepsake box. Hearthsong (Hearthsong.com) sells an oversized portfolio called My Place for Art, by Small World Toys ($19.95). Pottery Barn also offers great boxes for storing art collections.
You may also consider scanning or taking digital photos of your child's art. Although it's not the same as the original, this is a good way to reduce the clutter.
When you do decide to pare down the collection, why not use some to wrap gifts for friends, family members, and teachers? It will add a charming touch to every gift.
