Three Must-See Exhibits at Minnesota Children’s Museum This Spring

If you haven’t been to Minnesota’s biggest children’s museum lately, spring break may be a great time to explore a bunch of fun new experiences that will keep you and the kids smiling.

With a four-story climber, giant spiral slide, laser maze, wacky car wash, pretend town, ball launchers, maker space and more, there’s something for kids of all ages at Minnesota Children’s Museum. There’s even a special gallery designed just for toddlers and preschoolers.

Here are our recommendations for the top three new experiences that you definitely don’t want to miss during your next visit:

Framed: Step into Art

There’s always something new and fun to explore in the museum’s Special Exhibit Gallery, which changes throughout the year. Now through May 7, the space is home to Framed: Step into Art. This special exhibit introduces kids to visual art in a hands-on, interactive way (rather than the “don’t touch” model of traditional art museums).

Step into the 3D worlds of well-known paintings and explore art from the inside out. Enjoy a noontime meal in Grant Wood’s “Dinner for Threshers,” climb into a tent and tend a campfire in John Singer Sargent’s “Camp at Lake O’Hara,” add corn husks to the flower tower in Diego Rivera’s “Corn Festival” and get behind the reins of a giant rooster in an area inspired by Clementine Hunter’s artwork. You can even replace Mona Lisa’s famous smile with your own. It’s art like you’ve never experienced it before.

Nature Remix

The Imaginopolis gallery on the second floor has always been a space for storytelling and imaginative play. Since it recently reopened with an all-new experience, it has quickly became a visitor favorite.

Nature Remix transports you to a secret forest where everything is recognizable, but with a whimsical twist. Discover out-of-scale animals, plants and insects as you explore the gallery. Grab a costume and turn yourself into a unique creature, create a shelter using oversized leaves and fish scales, visit a squirrel’s house and bake sweet treats, then climb into a giant birds nest to take a rest. This quirky but inspiring environment is the perfect place for children to create their own world and tell their own stories.

Shipwreck Adventures

If you haven’t been to the museum lately, you may not know that a new permanent exhibit opened last year. Found on the museum’s first floor, Shipwreck Adventures is an immersive adventure filled with action-packed challenges and imaginative spaces.

Don scuba gear to dive deep into the waters of Lake Superior, maneuvering your way through a sunken pilot house and 20-foot-long ship hull (which is based on a real-life sunken ship). Practice hand signals and go through diver training in the laser maze, then work together to move equipment to and from the dive site. When you’re done, step onto the shoreline canopy of oversized plants and into the towering cliffs and coves areas inspired by the natural landscape of Lake Superior’s North Shore.

There’s so much to do and explore at Minnesota Children’s Museum. Plan your springtime visit now and save on admission when you buy tickets online ahead of time. Or, become a member and get free museum admission for your entire family for a full year!
