Want to buy a candy bar?

We asked readers of our weekly e-newsletter Minnesota Parent This Week how they feel about school fundraisers and whether they participate. Here’s what you said.

We do at least two fundraisers per year, but are attempting more this year. I am on the board at my child’s school, so I try to participate in all fundraising activities if time allows.
— Angela Zuniga, Brooklyn Park

Too much fundraising! I participate as I can, but it’s really too much.
— Tammy Lauer, St. Paul

My daughter’s school has about two fundraisers a year. My participation depends on the event or what is being sold. If it involves selling, we usually only sell to family members, getting about five to 10 orders. We will attend fundraiser events, like school carnivals or silent auctions, but typically I will not volunteer to help run them.
— Alicia Garcia, St. Paul

It seems to me that my child’s school does a fundraiser a month. It could be selling things — or even school pictures are now a fundraiser at his school. I will participate when I can.
— Sonja Bones, Coon Rapids

Just starting kindergarten this year. We know they sell “spirit” clothes as a fundraiser and have a festival raffle, but I haven’t gotten involved yet!
— Jen Spickelmeier, Richfield

My son is in high school and there is no fundraising! — Angela Spinler, Osseo

Our school does a few, but our favorite is the Spring Fling. We do carnival games for the kids, a book swap, BBQ hot dogs and brats, and have bouncy houses and a silent auction. We also do face painting and have a DJ. It’s a great time for the school community to come together. — Marcy Anagnostou, Eagan

They do a bit of fundraising with a book read-a-thon, but no candy bars just yet. Our son likes to compete though, so I can imagine a little businessman when that time comes! We support him if he wants to be gung ho about it. — Crystal Brown, St. Louis Park

I have participated a lot in fund-raising for [Early Childhood Family Education]. ECFE is underfunded by the state and needs help to fund teachers, supplies, and tuition for needy families. Fundraising is one of the only ways to bring in necessary dollars. — Shannon Menard, Maplewood
