Step Inside This Stunning Castle in Minneapolis—The American Swedish Institute Will Wow You

About the American Swedish Institute

Address: 2600 Park Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55407

If you’re looking for a family outing with history, culture, kid-friendly activities, and a little bit of magic, the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in Minneapolis should be at the top of your list. Known as “the castle” by many local families, the 1908 Turnblad Mansion (Minneapolis’ only true castle!) makes the perfect backdrop for a day of discovery with kids.

ASI is more than just a museum. It’s a lively cultural center where art, history, and hands-on fun come together. Explore rotating exhibitions that highlight Nordic and global culture. Wander through the historic rooms of the Turnblad Mansion. Stop by the Nelson Cultural Center to visit the award-winning FIKA Café (hello, kid-approved Swedish meatballs!). And, the ASI Museum Store is stocked with unique Nordic gifts.

Parents will also appreciate how welcoming ASI is for families of all ages. There are family restrooms, a quiet room for nursing or resting with little ones, and plenty of kid-friendly options at FIKA. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and full of opportunities to connect—not just with Nordic culture, but with other families too.

Whether your kids are curious explorers, budding artists, or love the idea of hanging out in a castle, the American Swedish Institute offers something for everyone.

Youth & Family Programs at the American Swedish Institute

For families with young children, the ASI really shines. The Family Gallery offers interactive play spaces inspired by Swedish authors, illustrators, and artists. The gallery gives kids the chance to imagine, explore, and create.

Then, programs like Kids at the Castle and Babies at the Castle open the doors to playful mornings filled with storytime, music, crafts, and movement. Additionally, families receive discounted admission that’s valid for the rest of the day. That means you can explore the mansion, check out the latest exhibits, and let the kids run around outside in the gardens without feeling rushed.

The ASI also offers year-round youth programs for school-age kids and teens. School-aged children can participate in craft workshops, where they can try Nordic-inspired handicrafts. Then, På Gang is a Sunday afternoon Swedish class and social club for teens. These programs bring culture to life in fun and engaging ways. Seasonal festivals and events keep things fresh, offering even more opportunities for family fun and enjoyment. At Christmas, enjoy the Julmarknad Handcraft Market & Festival. Families also love summer’s Midsommar Celebration and winter’s Winter Solstice Celebration.
