DVD Review: The Wonder Pets!: Save the Beetles

“What’s gonna work?” Come on, if you’ve ever seen The Wonder Pets! you know the answer: “Teeeeamwork!” The guinea pig, the turtle, and the duckling  (my daughter’s favorite line: “And Ming-Ming, too!”) are helpless classroom pets by day and superheroes after hours, when the phone rings telling them an animal is in trouble. This time, it’s a crew of musical beetles (get it?) whose submarine is tangled up in kelp and need to make it to their concert on time. The show, described as a “mini-operetta” is heavy on the Broadway musical talent and recorded with a live orchestra. The music is a high-quality homage to the real Beatles and eminently hummable. My kids, however, don’t particularly notice the quality of the music. And, as an adult, I can’t sit through the endless repetition. So this isn’t something we watch together. But it’s hard to say no to your munchkins when they want to watch something that makes them chant about working together.
