All hair is good hair.
That’s the motto of Melissa Taylor, a local mama, professional stylist and the owner of The Beauty Lounge salon in Northeast Minneapolis.
Her mission — in addition to running a full-service hair and makeup salon — is to help Twin Cities’ kids embrace their curly or textured hair, especially biracial or multiracial children whose parents might not have grown up styling anything other than straight hair.
Though women today still chemically alter or straighten their hair, there’s great beauty — and empowerment — in embracing one’s naturally beautiful curls and ringlets.
It’s just a matter of knowing how. So Taylor has been offering more classes for parents this year.
After six years of teaching her popular in-person class, Kids’ Hair Fundamentals, Melissa Taylor, the founder and CEO of The Beauty Lounge Minneapolis is going digital. Kids’ Hair Fundamentals is a digital course, specifically geared towards parents with limited experience managing these distinctive curls. Parents will learn how to embrace, not fight, the natural texture of their child’s unique ringlets. Upon completion of the course, participants will feel confident and better equipped to help their kids care for their hair. Melissa Taylor, owner of The Beauty Lounge Minneapolis, is the instructor for this innovative course.
Kids’ Hair Fundamentals is a self-paced, digital course for parents, teens, and the everyday woman. This class seeks to help individuals gain an understanding and appreciation for textured African American hair in all forms. There is a lack of understanding when it comes to caring for curly textured hair. Many women have either chemically or mechanically altered their hair at a young age, and have never had a chance to truly embrace their unique natural hair texture.

“One of the biggest things I teach is language. Never say, ‘Your hair is nappy.’ Never say it is ‘difficult.’ Speak positively,” Taylor told KARE 11-TV in a recent story about hair challenges. “Unfortunately, since the parent is dealing with hair that is not like theirs, it can be challenging. It is not that it’s more difficult. They are just not accustomed to it.”
