About French Regional Park

If you’re looking for a Twin Cities park that checks all the boxes for family fun, French Regional Park in Plymouth is it! Nestled along the shores of scenic Medicine Lake, this local gem in the Three Rivers Park District offers year-round adventures. French Regional Park offers something fun in every season. Discover exciting trails, a massive playground, and lakeside adventures in the summer. Winter’s snow brings even more fun along the park’s many trails. French Regional Park is one of the best outdoor destinations for Minnesota families!

The Playground

Let’s start with the crown jewel: the playground. This isn’t your average play structure—it’s an award-winning, multi-story climbing and sliding wonderland. With tunnels, nets, bridges, and slides of all sizes, it’s the kind of place kids won’t want to leave.

It’s thoughtfully designed for multiple age groups. There are areas where little climbers can explore safely while older kids scale higher levels. Additionally, shaded picnic tables are available near the playground for snacks or a packed lunch. The playground is right next to the Visitor Center (which has indoor bathrooms). The playground is partially fenced and out of sight from the lake.

Note: The playground is only open during the summer season.

Summer in the Park

When the weather’s warm, pack those swimsuits and head to the sandy beach! Medicine Lake offers a long beach and clean swimming area that’s perfect for cooling off on a summer afternoon. It’s open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day (9 AM to 8 PM). Although there’s no lifeguard on duty, the calm water and gentle shoreline make it an excellent spot for families. Restrooms and changing areas are conveniently located nearby.

Want to get on the water? Rent a canoe, kayak, or rowboat (when open and available). They are great for an hour or two of exploring Medicine Lake together. Rentals are affordable. And paddling along the lake with your kids is a memorable way to enjoy a summer’s day. Plus, don’t forget about the fishing pier. It’s a great spot for introducing kids to the joys of casting a line. With nearly a mile of shoreline, there’s plenty of space to enjoy the water.

Beyond the beach, hiking and biking trails wind through the woods and along the lakeshore. There are even some paved paths that are perfect for strollers and scooters. The 1.1-mile “Trail at Your Pace” loop features gentle terrain and offers rest stops every quarter mile, making it ideal for younger walkers. Bring bikes or scooters and make a loop between the Visitor Center and the beach.

Winter in the Park

In the cooler months, French Regional Park transforms into a snow-filled playground. Cross-country ski trails start at the Visitor Center. They are groomed daily. With 5.8 miles of trails and gear rentals available, it’s a great way to introduce tweens and teens to skiing.

Prefer something more low-key? Rent snowshoes. It’s a great way to explore the Nature Exploration Area—hilly, scenic, and full of winter magic. Finally, near the Visitor Center, there is also a large sledding hill! Popular with many local families, it’s a great spot to meet up with friends and enjoy a sunny winter’s day.
