Good scents crafted by a local mama

Several years ago, Lauren VanScoy suffered major stress and anxiety after the birth of her daughter. It came on suddenly.

After a diagnosis of depression that manifested itself as anxiety, her doctor prescribed medication.

“But I knew I eventually wanted to try more natural ways of dealing with my situation,” VanScoy said.

That spring, VanScoy, who lives in Shoreview, discovered the healing properties of essential oils.

“And that was the experience I needed to launch myself into my new passion,” she said.

Today the mother of two is the owner of a thriving, Twin Cities-based aromatherapy business, Essence One.

Online and in stores around the country, VanScoy sells oil blends in droppers and rollerballs as well as popular natural deodorants, shower steamers, bath teas, cleaning products and candles. And this month, her Essence One skin care line launches nationwide at Crate & Barrel stores. VanScoy also offers in-person consultations ($75), which each include one custom aromatherapy product.

“Being a mom is hard,” VanScoy says on her website. “People warn you, but you really can’t understand how much it messes with your life as you knew it, your hormones, your mind, your confidence, your time, your body.”

In keeping with its mission to support emotional health, Essence One donates funds to the organization Bring Change To Mind and its goal to end the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Essence One products were part of the gift baskets that many of the 92nd Academy Award nominees will receive. (Wow!)
