Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival on January 24

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board hosts the annual Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival on Saturday, January. 24, 12-4 pm!

Kites of all shapes, sizes, colors, and themes will fly over frozen Lake Harriet in a fun family festival featuring a kid’s DJ, s’mores, nature hikes, and yard games. Minnesota Kite Society experts will demonstrate maneuvering spectacular kites throughout the day and offer expertise to anyone interested in flying a kit. Bring your own kite or buy an inexpensive one at the lake.

The Minneapolis Kite Festival is a FREE outdoor event for people of all ages and abilities. Activities are centered around the north end of Lake Harriet near the Bandshell (4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway).

Shuttles and Parking

We will be offering a shuttle to the Kite Festival in 2026 and encourage folks to take advantage of this program to avoid traffic congestion.  The Kite Festival shuttle will run continuously from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 24 from the Executive Center (3033 Excelsior Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55416) to Lake Harriet, providing an easy, FREE and convenient way to get to the festival.  Three school bus shuttles will run continually throughout the festival.

The MPRB would like to thank event partners and event sponsors that help make the Kite Festival a success.

Ice Safety

Lake ice is never 100% safe. Stay away from channels, open water and areas where warning signs have been placed or cordoned off with caution tape or cones.

The safety of event attendees is the top priority. Staff are monitoring ice thickness and will provide updates as conditions evolve. More at https://www.minneapolisparks.org/activities-events/events/lake_harriet_winter_kite_festival
