From Flour to Fun: The Hidden Magic Inside Mill City Museum

Step Into History—Why Mill City Museum Is a Must-Visit for Minnesotans

Address: 704 S 2nd St, Minneapolis, MN 55401

About the Mill City Museum

Step inside a crumbled giant and travel back in time to the early days of Minneapolis and Saint Paul! Nestled on the Mississippi Riverfront, Mill City Museum is where Minnesota’s milling past comes alive—with just enough grit, flour dust, and sweeping river views to keep you and your kids totally hooked.

Housed within the ruins of a once-mighty flour mill, Mill City Museum is not your typical “look but don’t touch” museum. This place is part history lesson, part playground for the imagination, and all hands-on.

Start your visit by tracing wheat’s journey from the prairie to your breakfast table. Kids can design their own cereal boxes, crawl under a harvest crew’s dinner table, and check out enormous 19th-century milling machines. Not to mention, enjoy old cereal and baking commercials from decades past by local favorites like General Mills!

Mill City Museum offers interactive learning opportunities with a serious wow-factor. It’s a great spot to gain a better understanding of how Minneapolis rose from the river to become a milling giant!

Mill City Museum Exhibits that Kids (and Adults!) Will Love

The Flour Tower ride is a must. Buckle into a massive elevator that lifts you through eight floors of explosive history—literally. With booming sound effects and dramatic lighting, you’ll hear the authentic voices of former mill workers as they describe the power and danger of working in what was once the world’s largest flour mill.

Then take a breather (and a giggle break) at Minneapolis in 19 Minutes Flat! This family-friendly film is hosted by Minnesota humorist Kevin Kling. It’s quirky, clever, and surprisingly touching—a whirlwind tour of the city’s colorful history.

In the Baking Lab, families can see what happens when flour hits the oven—expect hands-on demos, yummy samples, and a chance to compare different grains.

Then, the Water Lab lets kids explore how St. Anthony Falls powered a booming industry with splashy, interactive fun.

Before you go, head to the Rooftop Observation Deck for sweeping views of the Mississippi River, Stone Arch Bridge, and the Ruin Courtyard below. If the weather’s nice, wander through the courtyard and listen to the “Cloudy Waters” audio exhibit, which shares Dakota perspectives on the river.
