Being a parent is busy, but being a parent, a few weeks before moving day can seem almost impossible! TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® understands that every moment and dollar is sacred when it comes to raising little ones. We’re sharing a few pointers to help your big moving day go as easy and inexpensive as possible. Don’t forget to download our handy checklist at the end of the post!

6 TIPS FOR A SMOOTH MOVE

1) BOOK EARLY

This time of year, moving companies tend to book up fast, especially towards the end of the month. To ensure you get that perfect move day, contact us at least two weeks to a month in advance. This also relieves stress by knowing your move day is set and ready well in advance.

2) ORGANIZE AND DONATE

One simple task. Get organized and get rid of the things you don’t need. In my personal experience, we did not do this, and we had so much unwanted stuff in our new home. Getting rid of things on the front end makes life so much easier. Take 2-3 hours each week before the move to go through closets and drawers. This minimizes the items you have to move (and the cost of your move). It also creates a faster process when setting up your new home. Also, donate unwanted clothes to a local shelter or non-profit to help those in need in your community.

3) PACK AND CENTRALIZE

Time is of the essence, whether you are a parent to an infant or have three little rascals running around. Families can make moving a faster process by packing and labeling boxes. Having all your small items and boxes in one room helps our movers work faster. Labeling boxes will allow our movers to correctly place your items in your new home. Also, try using colored labels or permanent marker to mark the boxes that belong to each room in your new home. This will help the movers save time unloading the truck. This is an immense time and money saver!

4) DISASSEMBLE

Many pieces of furniture need disassembling before the move. Our movers are more than happy to disassemble most furniture. You can shave time off your final bill if you take apart your bed frames, dining table, and other large pieces before the movers arrive. Again, putting all the pieces of the furniture in one location will not only save packing time, but will also keep you on budget.

5) MINIMIZE YOUR WORK

There are a few tricks you can use to cut down on the prep work for your move. First, don’t worry about taking clothes out of your drawers! We’re able to pad and wrap your drawers like any other piece of furniture. Make sure there aren’t any hard or fragile items that may break or move around during the drive to your new home. Next, put the hardware from each disassembled piece of furniture into individual plastic bags. Tape the bags to the corresponding pieces of furniture so they won’t get lost when you go to reassemble. Finally, put together a “Day-of-Move” box. This is a box of items that you will need right away. Be sure to include clothes, medicine, cleaning supplies, and toiletries for the first couple of days in your new home. This way, you won’t have to dig through all your boxes to find those essentials right after a tiring move.

5) HAVE FUN!

Don’t let the stresses of moving get you worn down. Moving into a new home is an exciting time! It’s TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s job to give you time to enjoy the excitement of moving into the next chapter of your life. If you are feeling tight on time, ask about other services moving companies can offer. We offer services like packing, storage, and junk removal. Keep calm and let us help move you forward!

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR MOVING COMPANY BEFORE BOOKING WITH THEM?

It’s very important to feel comfortable with your moving company. Their goal is to ease the stress on your day, not add to it! The last thing anyone wants on moving day is an injury or an unexpected damage to an item. It is very important to do your research when you choose a PROFESSIONAL moving company. Here are the top 5 questions to ask before booking your move.

  • Do you have insurance that covers damages?
  • Do you use temporary workers or contractors, or are your employees full-time?
  • Are your movers drug-tested and background-checked?
  • Are your movers trained before going into the field?
  • Does your estimated price include ALL COSTS. This includes fuel, taxes, insurance, padding and wrapping furniture, disassembly and reassembly of furniture?
