The journey of 26 miles begins online
Young Girls Running on Grass

Twenty-six miles in one day is too much for little legs – and some bigger legs as well – but take it one mile at a time, and your family can run a marathon.

The Medtronic Twin Cities Kids Marathon offers a series of 12-week training programs culminating in fun half-mile or mile races. Families who sign up between June 25 and July 16 can prepare to run in the October event that will be held at the State Capitol. Or sign up anytime to get a free training program and track your progress.

“We want to provide the community with free tools to get fit,” says Virginia Brophy Achman, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon executive director. “The program is meant to get people moving.”

Getting started

– Sign up for a training program at www.tcmevents.org

– Grab a comfy pair of running shoes.

– Start running according to your four-, eight- or 12-week plan.

– Track your progress online.

Make running fun

– Rebecca Fliszar, of New Ulm, and her daughters, Maggie and Emma, set up flags to create a finish line at the end of their run.

– Nancy Brantner, of Columbia Heights, and her children Loren, 6, and Gwendolyn, 8, turn their regular runs into fun races. Branton also reminds her kids that at the end of their one-mile race, they will receive a gold medal and T-shirt.

– Visit the marathon website for warm-up drills, team relays, and cool-down stretches.
