Why you need to see Circus Abyssinia: Tulu at CTC

I am surprised to write this, but this was the first show I have seen at Children’s Theatre Company.

My kids and husband have seen shows there before. I must have got them tickets to go and decided it was a great way for me to have some “me time”!

So when my daughter and I showed up to see Tulu, I was taking it all in for the first time.

The theatre is located within the Minneapolis Institute of Arts building which is great because if you want to head there early, you can go check out the art galleries. Admission to MIA is free, and they accept and appreciate donations.

The children’s theatre is upstairs, and they have art activities, snacks, and photo ops for the kids before the show starts!

The theatre is great because it is intimate, and everyone there has kids with, so when kids are giggling, asking questions, or have to go to the bathroom, it’s no biggie!

The show Circus Abyssinia: Tulu uses the grace and athleticism of the circus arts to trace the path traveled by history-making Ethiopian female runner Derartu Tulu, who grew up in a small rural village and became the first Black African woman to win Olympic gold. The performances in Tulu are incredible. There are 13 acts that all lasted about five minutes, keeping the kids engaged and curious about what’s next!

Russian Swing

These guys sure know how to have fun! The height they get when dismounting from the swing is incredible! The whole crowd was cheering during the swing act.

Roller Skating Duet

The roller skating duet team did a fantastic job! During this performance, I couldn’t believe the amount of trust each person had in one another. WoW!

Flaming Hoop Diving and Fire Juggling

This duo was fantastic. They lit up the stage with their juggling act. Anyone that can juggle impresses me, let alone juggling fire! Another significant act of the show!

I highly recommend grabbing tickets for the whole family, including the grandparents. This show is excellent for all ages.

The show runs through October 23. Tickets, priced between $15 – $64, can now be purchased at childrenstheatre.org/circus or by calling the ticket office at 612.874.0400.

One last tip. Make sure to grab a program! They include kids’ activities, fun facts about the show, and questions to ask on the ride home!
