Raspberry Island Sculptures in St. Paul

This summer, get ready for a magical experience the whole family will love! Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island is a vibrant outdoor art exhibit coming to Raspberry Island in Saint Paul — and it’s like stepping into a storybook full of color and imagination.

What are Alebrijes?
Alebrijes are fantastical, brightly colored creatures first dreamed up in 1936 by Mexican artist Pedro Linares while he was sick with a fever. In his dreams, he saw wild animals with mixed features — like frogs with butterfly wings or lions with fish faces — all shouting the word “alebrijes!” After recovering, he began crafting these whimsical animals out of papier-mâché, creating a one-of-a-kind folk art tradition that’s still celebrated today in Mexico.

Now, 16 larger-than-life Alebrije sculptures will be displayed all summer long on Raspberry Island, thanks to a special partnership between the Minnesota Latino Museum and the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage. This is the first-ever exhibit of its kind in Minnesota — and it’s perfect for sparking curiosity and creativity in kids and adults alike.
