ASI Holiday Exhibition—Tomte: The Gnome, The Myth, The Legend

ASI Holiday Exhibition! All things gnome this year at the American Swedish Institute’s cherished annual holiday experience!

Get ready to immerse your family in the magic of the holiday season at the American Swedish Institute! The ASI Holiday Exhibition is excited to host its 75th annual holiday celebration, running from November 8th to January 25th. This year’s festivities are packed with Nordic-inspired holiday fun, special programs, delicious treats, and plenty of opportunities for joyful family memories.

One of the main attractions is the delightful exhibition in the historic Turnblad Mansion, where you and your family can explore the enchanting world of the tomte. This year’s exhibition takes you on a journey through the fascinating history of this beloved gnome-like figure. Learn how the tomte has evolved over the years, from its roots in folklore to the cherished holiday icon it is today.

Tomte Tales: Legends of Winter. Traverse the castle with Tomte to discover iconic holiday characters like Lucia, Krampas, Julbok, Santa, reindeer, and Tomte’s animal companions. ASI’s Holiday Exhibition is an exploration of the winter season and Nordic folklore creatures.

Britta Walstrom, Program Manager at ASI, shares the excitement: “We’re bringing the enchanting world of tomte to life this holiday season. Our guests are in for a truly memorable experience.” ASI President and CEO, Molly Wright Steenson, adds, “This year’s holiday experience at the American Swedish Institute is all about fun, tradition, and community. The legend behind the tomte is something everyone will enjoy discovering. Join us in making new holiday memories together!”
