Take your family to the top of one of Minneapolis’s most iconic buildings—the Foshay Tower! A quirky slice of local history wrapped in a 32-story skyscraper, this landmark invites families to explore a fascinating museum and take in breathtaking 360° city views from its open-air Observation Deck.
Initially built in 1929 by eccentric businessman Wilbur Foshay, the Foshay Tower was the tallest building in the Midwest for nearly 50 years. Shaped as a tribute to the Washington Monument, it still proudly displays FOSHAY in 10-foot-tall letters across its crown. Though the city has since grown up around it, this unique building still holds its place in Minnesota’s skyline and story.
The small museum, tucked away on the 30th floor, dives into Wilbur Foshay’s ambitious—and ultimately ill-fated—dream. With engaging exhibits about the building’s history, its ties to the 1929 stock market crash, and its legacy in Minneapolis, it’s a surprisingly fun stop for older kids and teens interested in history or architecture.
But the real thrill for most visitors? The Observation Deck on the 31st floor. You’ll climb two short flights of stairs from the museum to reach the open-air viewing platform, where telescopes help you spot city landmarks, downtown skyscrapers, and even some of Minneapolis’s lakes. On clear days, the view is truly unforgettable.
Please note that the Observation Deck is weather-dependent and closes during extreme cold or inclement conditions. Call ahead during the winter months for updates.
Though not ideal for strollers or those with mobility issues due to the final staircase, the Foshay Museum & Observation Deck is a fantastic stop for adventurous families with curious kids.
