About the Lake Superior Zoo

Looking for a family adventure packed with northern Minnesota vibes and wild animals? Head to Duluth to meet the resident tigers, sloths, and porcupines! The Lake Superior Zoo offers an unforgettable adventure for curious and energetic kids of all ages.

With over 300 animals from more than 100 species, this zoo is packed with family-friendly experiences and excitement. It’s the only zoo in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin—perfect for a family day trip or weekend getaway.

The Lake Superior Zoo is also one of the oldest zoos in the U.S., with a history of bringing people and animals together. It’s small enough to explore in a few hours, but full of big moments your kids will talk about long after. Finally, accessible paths make it easy for families of all abilities and those with strollers. So, pack the snacks, charge your camera, and head to Duluth’s wild side. The friendly staff and animals are waiting!

Plan Your Trip to the Lake Superior Zoo

From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by a chorus of animal sounds and vibrant exhibits. Your kids will love starting their visit with a hello to Kaya and Kermit, the Angolan colobus monkeys who’ve been charming visitors since 2013. Then, help them spot even more creatures, like a snow leopard, Amur tiger, red panda, and even a two-toed sloth. Make sure to wave at Trouble, the zoo’s most famous black bear—he even inspired the children’s book A Bear Named Trouble. Animal-loving kids will be fascinated by the range of animals at the Lake Superior Zoo—from tiny hedgehogs to massive brown bears.

Of course, indoor exhibits offer a cozy escape on rainy, chilly, or hot days. Check out the African-crested porcupine, Goeldi’s monkey, or the sleepy-eyed pygmy slow loris.

Little ones can also get up close with goats, sheep, pigs, and rabbits at the barnyard area. Charlotte and Fern, Kunekune pigs from New Zealand, along with their barnyard friends, are ready for pets and snacks. It’s an excellent way for kids to learn about animals through touch and observation.

Don’t miss the daily animal enrichment schedule. Kids can watch as animals explore new toys, scents, and activities with their caregivers. These sessions aren’t just fun—they help the animals stay healthy and active. And, they help kids learn about their favorite animals and how to care for them. Your kids might even catch a tiger pouncing on a giant ball or a porcupine investigating a treat-filled puzzle!

Need a break? Stop by the Safari Café for snacks, pizza, and shakes. There are plenty of outdoor spaces to sit, picnic, and run off some energy.

The zoo is open year-round, so winter visits come with a snowy twist—and fewer crowds.
