Richardson Nature Center, located in the beautiful Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington, is the perfect place for a family day surrounded by nature. Just minutes from Minneapolis, this hidden gem offers a variety of activities that both kids and adults will love.

Start your visit at the indoor interpretive center. As you walk in, you’ll be greeted by colorful mosaics and sculptures that bring the natural world to life. Don’t forget to visit the center’s resident raptors, reptiles, and amphibians—learning about these fascinating creatures is an exciting experience for children of all ages. The indoor area also has a small play area, books, and other engaging activities inviting kids to stay and play.

Then, pick up one of the free nature kits, like bird-watching backpacks, pond exploration kits, or bug kits, and start your outdoor exploration. Step outside and enjoy the park’s expansive outdoor spaces. The hiking trails wind through restored prairie, oak forests, and wetlands, offering plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. Watch for deer, foxes, muskrats, and even turkeys. You might even spot nesting pairs of ospreys or trumpeter swans in the warmer months! If you’re into bird-watching, some trails even include boardwalk lookout areas to help you get a closer look at the birds and marine life around the ponds.

One of the best parts of Richardson Nature Center is the Nature Exploration Area. This designated space allows kids to roam freely and play in nature. It’s a place to dig, climb, explore, and build forts. There is even a mud kitchen! Here, kids can use their imaginations to connect with the outdoors. Parents can play along or relax on a nearby bench while watching the kids enjoy their outdoor adventure.
