The “Paper Dialogues: The Dragon and Our Stories” exhibition

It’s pretty hard to imagine how this exhibition came to life, considering each piece of artwork is hand-cut, and most works contain over 1 million (yes, ONE MILLION) cuts.
Located within the American Swedish Institute and throughout the Turnblad Mansion, there are seven white dragon eggs and a massive 30-foot paper dragon. This is the 2nd stop of their world tour featuring artists Karen Bit Vejle (Denmark) and Professor Xiaoguang Qiao(China).

The artwork on display highlights the importance of understanding shared traditions and common ground despite language barriers. This exhibit is joined at ASI by Thermal, a multidisciplinary installation of form, movement, and sound that focuses on Earth’s changing environment and features the works of Twin Cities artist Kim Heidkamp.

For the Kids: ASI’s newest Family Gallery installation, Our Dragon Story, was designed with local students. The gallery has been transformed into a vibrant and immersive space for young visitors to experience stories created by local artists and fifth-grade students at Hope Academy. All the elements within this space feature large and small-scaled play spaces and areas for quiet play and reading and offer hands-on learning opportunities for children and accompanying adults.

Special events during the exhibit include:

  • Thermal Live Performances
  • Thermal Artist talk
  • Midwinter Folk Music Festival

They will also offer in-person and virtual youth, family and adult arts and crafts programming related to Paper Dialogues, including:

  • Watercolor Story Beasts
  • Youth Handcraft Workshops
  • Babies at the Castle
  • Painting with Wool
  • Tunnel Books
  • Playful Spring Watercolors
  • Craft and Cocktails
